Q: How do I know God's will for my life?
A: The bottom line is that God's will is for us to be his children. What we do after that is not the primary issue. Does he call some to specific vocations? Yes, sometimes. Here are some of my primary musings on God's Call:
God guides us into tasks, not vocations. Sometimes these tasks last for a decade, usually its only a few years and then we move, shift, or transition.
God calls us through our eyes more than our ears. Often we respond to needs we see, not internal voices that clarify our single-life's purpose.
God often calls us through our own giftedness and desires. We gravitate toward tasks we are good at and enjoy doing. We are good at them because the gifts God has given and the Spirit has enlivened. And we enjoy them because we sense the hand of the Lord on us while we are carrying it out and the Holy Spirit coursing through us as we are effective for Him.
Most students are far too concerned about what to do when they graduate. Sure there are some decisions about degree plans and Christian service projects that will vary depending on your ultimate goals. But by-and-large we worry rather than prepare. Avoid this mistake. God has been faithful in leading you up to this point. Don't second-guess him now. In his own time he will guide you to the next in your series of tasks.
