Course Description: Semester one covers the beginning of the gospel up through the first year of ministry. It concentrates on the birth narratives, early Judean ministry, and early Galilean Ministry. Major sermons: Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5–7); Jesus’ Deity and Credentials (John 5). Students will concentrate on learning Jesus’ primary identity and proclamation of the kingdom. (4 hours).

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To experience the majesty and wonder of the Incarnation.

  2. To become familiar with the gospel accounts of Jesus from His birth through His early Judean ministry, particularly those events that inaugurated Jesus’ public ministry.

  3. To research the Sermon on the Mount and understand Jesus’ program for the kingdom.

  4. To appreciate a portrait of Jesus in his Palestinian milieu.

PROJECTS:
  1. Harmonies (15 points): You will turn in a harmony for each section that is in bold on the daily schedule. Follow the following format. (A) Each gospel will be recorded word for word in its own column but positioned so that parallel words and phrases are matched across the columns. Color coding to show important similarities or differences is encouraged. (B) Each section will be followed by two paragraphs: (i) Make note of distinctive words or phrases that one writer uses that the others do not. If these are important editorial changes or theological emphases for that author explain why they are important or how they affect the understanding of the passage? (ii) How does this pericope fit into its own context in each gospel? What comes before it and what comes after it? And does this arrangement of the material affect the understanding of this text?  Several sample harmonies can be found at:
http://markmoore.org/classes/loc/harmony.html. A collection of them is kept on reserve at the Seth Wilson Library. (1 point each)

  2. Memory: There are three passages assigned to be memorized verbatim from the NIV--John 1:1-34; John 3:1-21; and Matthew 5:1-48.  These will be written out in class on the day they are assigned. Count off 1 point for every word left out, for every extra word included and every time words are transposed. Count off 2 points for every verse or phrase that is misplaced. As an alternative to the final exam, students are encouraged to memorize the Sermon on the Mount.

  3. Paper: Each student will write an exegetical term paper over one of the passages listed in the schedule. Think in terms of 8-10 pages with 15 cited references. Do not use end notes. It must be emailed to loc@markmoore.org by 5:00 the day it is due Do not use end notes. A Term paper guide is available in the bookstore or online here.

  4. Book Report: Be prepared to take a simple quiz over The Meaning of Jesus, by M. Borg & N.T. Wright on the day the reading is due. Bring a Grademaster sheet

  5. Extra Credit: Click here for a list of projects that can be researched for extra credit.
